Obetz Animal Hospital Open House - August 22nd, 9am-3pm

We have again been invited to Obetz Animal Hospital's annual Open House.
This year the event will take place at their new Emergency Clinic near the intersection of US 33 and Diley Road between Pickerington and Canal Winchester.

The event starts at 9am and they want tables set up by 8:30, so we'll need to be at the clinic by 8am. If I can get at FOUR volunteers, I'll make two shifts (set up to 12:30 and noon to tear down). Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and the shift for which you are available (or all day, if you'd like). This is an outside event, so we'll have a tent, info table, and foster rabbit (volunteers are asked to bring their own chairs).

The Clinic will have a cook-out, raffle prizes, and games. Several rescue groups (cat/dog) will be there, along with a Pet ID group, doggy Day Care, Adler House photography, and others.

Wessie Fest - August 28th, 10am - 2pm

Wessie Fest along the Alum Creek Bike trail in Westerville is scheduled for Saturday, August 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is an outdoor event, so we'll have a tent, info table, and foster rabbit (volunteers are asked to bring their own chairs).

This is a very family-friendly event: lots of kids, and lots of fun! Other groups include wildlife education and awareness groups, environmental groups, etc. It's a very "hands-on" event!

More info is at

It was with great sadness today that CHRS members attended the memorial service for Ian Lynch, 13 year old son of CHRS volunteers Megan and Chris Lynch. Ian was an extraordinary boy on the verge of becoming an incredible young man. He was known for his passion for soccer and running, and his speed earned him the nickname "Cheetah." Though much was made of his athletic ability, he also had a gentle side. Earlier this year, he was required to complete a community service project for his classes at Grandview Heights' Edison Middle School. Ian chose as his subject the "Make Mine Chocolate!" campaign. He thoroughly researched the CHRS and MMC websites to learn (more) about living with and caring for house rabbits. He helped Megan print MMC flyers, and on a chilly, blustery day before Easter, attended the Short North's Gallery Hop to help place them in local businesses and pass them out to Hop attendees.

Megan said one of her favorite memories is of Ian lying on the couch watching tv, with his arm hanging over the edge, and Blackberry lounging in just the right spot for Ian to pet her. She loved him, and it was obvious that he loved her, too.

A memorial fund has been established to cover medical and funeral expenses as well as to contribute to LifeNet Health, the organ transplant organization. Please send contributions to the Ian Lynch Trust c/o PNC Bank, Thurber Village, 763 Neil Ave., Columbus 43215.

Terri received the following email concerning an organization doing great things for rabbits and other critters.

My rescued bunny, Peter-Not-A-Tail (HE HAS NO TAIL!!) is currently in a photo contest with SOS Ohio representing rescued bunnies everywhere in the name of spaying and neutering!

S.O.S is a low cost spay and neuter clinic that works with the public and also shelters across Ohio in getting dogs, cats, and bunnies spayed and neutered.

ALL money raised in this contest goes towards the spay and neuter clinic (which is bunny friendly!). This is a really great way to promote the importance of a fixed rescued bunny while also supporting an awesome cause. Each vote is just one dollar! I would love to see Peter do well. He is the only bunny in the contest!! We need to represent! :)

I hope you can spread this information far and wide and help spread the importance of spaying and neutering your pets!

Vote here.

Thank you again!

This is making the rounds on Facebook. A group called Matter of Trust is collecting hair and fur to make mats that soak up oil from oil spills like the one in the Gulf. According to their website, one pound of hair/fur can soak up one quart of oil in one minute. It can be wrung out and reused over and over.

Since all our bunnies are shedding right now, I thought it could be a good way for CHRS members to help with the oil spill in the Gulf. I already registered at the Matter of Trust site and would be willing to collect and ship the fur. It seems like a pretty simple thing to do that could really help. People just need to get the fur to me directly, not dropped off at Karalee's. They could even bring it to the picnic.

CHRS members Heather and John Dean were invited to give a presentation at United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio on Monday, January 11th. UCP of Central Ohio is an agency that provides programs and services for people with disabilities and aging conditions.

Heather works at UCP of Central Ohio and makes every effort to spread the word about the joys of living with rabbits. Daphne, a big black New Zealand bun, helped John and Heather show the group how much fun house rabbits can be. Before the presentation started, Daphne got some nose pets and then settled down with a dramatic bunny flop! During the presentation, she was happy to munch on some greens and hay to emphasize the proper diet for a rabbit.

The group was most interested in learning about bunny proofing methods to protect rabbits from chewing dangerous cords. Heather explained that bunny proofing items can easily be purchased at the local hardware store. Of course the highlight of the day was getting the opportunity to pet Daphne. She was definitely soaking up the attention.

CHRS would like to thank UCP of Central Ohio for inviting us to talk with the participants and staff about the responsibilities of having a house rabbit.

A belated Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that you and your families had a happy and safe holiday season.

I certainly did, in spite of the cold I came down with on Christmas day. But Laine was kind enough to loan me the first season of Dexter (a Showtime series), which I thoroughly enjoyed. So a few days spent lounging in bed turned out to be quite wonderful. Plus my family remains intact. My girls will be 13 sometime this year and are showing their age. But with the help of meds and a vigilant medical team, we all made it through another year and I am relieved that 2009 is now over.

As we face what looks to be a long, cold, snowy winter, I am soliciting content for this blog. In particular, I am looking for funny stories that exemplify life with rabbits. I have spent a lot of time with canines over the past few weeks and find them quite enjoyable but just not as charming as my beloved lagomorphs. So what is it about rabbits that makes them such delightful companions?

Please send stories and pictures. I need something to help me stay warm this winter!

After the disappointing cancellation of our grill fundraiser with Whole Foods this past summer, they decided to find another way to help us. For this quarter, October - January, we are one of the two non-profits selected to be featured for their Nickels for Non-Profits Program.

The Nickels for Non-Profits program raises money by giving customers 5 cents in the form of a wooden nickel for each grocery bag they bring to the store and use for their groceries. You, the customer, can then put the wooden nickels in the box at the end of the grocery lanes near the door. You will see a brief description of us and the other non-profit by the boxes.

If you shop at Whole Foods, please take your bags and ask for wooden nickels. Hopefully we can make a good showing against the other group, Hand Me Down Dobes.

Thanks for supporting CHRS!

Dear Friends,

I have created TEAM RABBIT to participate in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and I'm hoping you'll walk with me.

So far, Sue - our Survivor - and Julie and Laine have said they will walk with me. I believe you will have to visit my Team page and join.

I know there are a lot of breast cancer events out there, but Making Strides speaks to me because funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to help people stay well and get well from breast cancer, find cures, and empower people to fight back today. With your help, we can save lives.

If you'd like to join me at Making Strides, please visit my personal page. If you won't be in town, I hope you'll still support my efforts by making a donation of any amount you can spare.

As a little extra inspiration, I thought you might like to know a few of the ways the funds raised through Making Strides will help the American Cancer Society save lives every day.

When you walk and make donation...

    * More people in our community will have the information and tools they need to help prevent breast cancer or find it early.
* More people with breast cancer will have a place to turn around the clock to help them through every step of their cancer journey - whether it's a free ride to treatment, a place to stay, or just talking to someone who has "been there."
* More progress will be made toward finding breast cancer's causes and cures. The American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer breakthrough of the last century, which have led to the discovery of lifesaving breast cancer treatments like Tamoxifen and Herceptin. You will help us find more.
* More women - like our own mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers - will have access to lifesaving mammograms and treatment they need.

Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against breast cancer ... whatever your reasons, I hope you'll choose to make a difference by signing up to walk with me or making a donation online. I'm so grateful to have great people like you in my life who care about helping fight breast cancer!

Sincerely,

Terri Cook
